VIRGINIA WATER, England -- Luke Donald moved to the brink of a second successive BMW PGA Championship title and reclaiming the top ranking by shooting a 3-under 69 to take a two-stroke lead after the third round on Saturday.
Donald overcame tough, windy conditions at Wentworth to be one of only three players to break 70 on a day of high scoring that led course designer Ernie Els to criticize European Tour officials for the state of the greens.
Donald's fellow Englishman Justin Rose (69) was alone in second at 9 under while Peter Lawrie of Ireland (72) was two shots further back at 7 under.
''Physically and mentally, it was tough out there and it's going to be a grind tomorrow,'' said Donald, who would become only the third player -- after Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie -- to defend the title here in the biggest event on the European Tour aside from the British Open.
He needs to finish in the top eight to retake No. 1 from Rory McIlroy, who missed the cut for the second tournament in a row after a 79 on Friday.
England's James Morrison started the day with a four-shot lead on 12 under, but made two 8s -- one triple bogey and one quadruple bogey -- on his way to an 81 to fall eight shots off the pace.
''With the wind and the firmness of the course, it was brutal,'' said the 236th-ranked Morrison. ''I'm very, very disappointed but it's definitely a learning curve for me.''
Morrison shot 64 on Friday but was one of nine players to make 80 or more when winds of up to 30 mph combined with hard greens to wreak havoc on an already-tough West Course.
Els, one of four players tied for fourth on 5 under after shooting 70, unloaded an expletive-laced tirade after his round in which he slammed Wentworth greenkeepers and European Tour officials for failing to adequately water the putting surfaces.
''I'm fed up with it ... It's not my bloody job doing it. It's their job. They have been around a long time, I'm really disappointed with it,'' said the two-time U.S. Open champion, who was criticized last year for making the course too difficult after helping redesign it in 2010.
Ian Poulter (69) was the only other player to break 70 and stands at 3 under.
Conditions dictated a cool head and Donald showed it once again. He had four birdies and dropped only one shot on the par-4 15th. He holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the last to give him an extra cushion heading into Sunday, a year after his playoff victory over Lee Westwood here.
''This is a tough place and demands a huge amount of patience,'' Donald said. ''It's not great for a bomber (off the tee). It's great for somebody who can work their way around.
''The good players that can be patient and deal with it are always going to rise to the top usually.''
Rose bounced back from dropping shots at Nos. 2 and 3 to go through the rest of his round bogey-free, keeping him in contention for a win that could move him to a career-high No. 5 in the rankings.
''There were some borderline holes out there,'' said Rose, referring to Els' comments that players were struggling to hold their approach shots on the greens. ''It took all of your experience and skill and patience.''

Ravens at Patriots Game Recap

Posted Aug 7, 2008

Strong performance by defense gives Ravens victory in preseason opener.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- With Tom Brady having the night off, the Patriots were far from perfect in their first game after a nearly perfect season. For John Harbaugh, the Ravens' 16-15 exhibition win Thursday was a good start to his head coaching career.

Harbaugh got a look at the quarterbacks competing to succeed the retired Steve McNair. Kyle Boller started for Baltimore, Troy Smith replaced him and both played decently. First-round draft pick Joe Flacco looked like a rookie, losing a fumble on his second play.

Three quarterbacks are competing to be Brady's backup on a team that was 18-0 before losing the Super Bowl to the New York Giants.

Third-round choice Kevin O'Connell led the Patriots to their only touchdown on a 31-yard march after Flacco's fumble. But O'Connell played the last third of the game against defenders far down on the depth chart.

Another newcomer to New England had one of the best games for the team. LaMont Jordan, fighting for a job behind Laurence Maroney, ran with power, picking up 76 yards and scoring on a 1-yard run just 13 days after being released by Oakland following his seventh NFL season.

The Ravens got key plays from Yamon Figurs with a 52-yard punt return that set up their only touchdown and a 48-yard kickoff return that led to one of Matt Stover's two field goals.

Fabian Washington had two interceptions for the Ravens.

Harbaugh took over after 10 seasons as a Philadelphia assistant following the firing of Brian Billick on Dec. 31.

The Ravens led 16-3 on field goals by Stover of 42 and 44 yards and by Piotr Czech of 37 yards and a 1-yard touchdown run by Le'Ron McClain. Stephen Gostkowski kicked three field goals. Jordan's 1-yard run made it 16-15 with 6:07 left. But O'Connell's pass for a 2-point conversion was knocked down at the line

Matt Cassel, entering his fourth season with the Patriots, started and completed just one of four passes for four yards. Second-year pro Matt Gutierrez was 10-for-16 for 76 yards and O'Connell went 6-for-13 for 57 yards. Each of the three threw an interception.

It was the Patriots' first game following a season sullied by Spygate for which the club and coach Bill Belichick were penalized by the NFL for videotaping New York Jets' assistant coaches.

Their quest for a perfect record nearly ended in their 12th game of the season at Baltimore when they overcame a 24-17 deficit to win 27-24 on a touchdown with 44 seconds left

Their passing combination of NFL MVP Brady and Randy Moss had the night off after a season in which they set NFL records -- Brady with 50 touchdown passes and Moss with 23 scoring catches.

For Baltimore, leading rusher Willis McGahee sat out with a knee injury.
